gas milage

I have 44k on my truck and I did an oil change, new fuel filter, and put in a K&N filter into the stock airbox. I travelled from LI New York to Cleveland and got 29.4 miles per gallon. keep in mind that i dont drive like the rest of the idiots out on I 80. I stayed between 60 and 65 and that truck just cruised along real good. Throwing in some techron every other month will help out also.

You did this with a 4.0?

I'm not a cop, but When I worked for Ford the first time i was putting all the lights for the vol. fire department on my truck and when i was done the service manager handed it to me and said it looks like an undercover. Some people wouldnt even pass me on the highway. I also have a small side business selling Emergency lighting for vollies.

As for the gas mileage, yes I do have a 4.0. Even driving around town, i do not pull hole shots leaving green lights, or accelerate fast and i try to stay around 35-45 mph. when the od in my truck fully kicks in and it will do between 1500 and 1650 rpm. This is all stock except for the airfilter. I noticed a big difference with this truck with the K&N in it, and it has helped gas mileage. since i put it in about 4k miles ago, i have been averaging 19+ city and 25+ highway. I have not chipped the truck or re programmed it.

I just sit back and laugh at the idiots in their prius driving 85mph wondering why they dont get the advertised mpg.

i just pulled 18.5 MPG this weekend. best i have gotten on a tank since i have had it.

I pulled 19.4 driving 75 to omaha around omaha for 2 days and then driving 75 back home. 296.4 miles on 15.29 gals. of gas. Not gonn b*tch about that.

i have discoverd that 75mph is the best speed to gas usage ratio. since being here in europe where speed limits are mere sugestions and running down the interstate at 95 (governed) tends to use WAY to much WAY to fast.

my 91 ranger gets 250km to a tank if im lucky and it 100 bucks to fill but i have 37s and 3:73 gears

I just got 22mpg on my last fill up, 50/50 city-highway. Buy a vaccuum gauge and use it, teaches you when to gas and when to not.Thats the only secret i can contribute. 99 4.0, 4x4, 5pd manual, 3.73 LS

That gas mileage does sound very poor. My math isn't great but I'm guessing that you are achieving roughly 10 US mpg (perhaps a little more). The 4.0 in your 08 is different from the one in your 1992, your 08 has an OHC. One factor could possibly be weather or not your engine is broken in yet. How many miles does it have on it? Is your transmission manual or automatic? I found out after surfing the forums that I've been shifting too low and when I changed that habit I gained about 1.5mpg. I have an 03 (xlt) and checked the axle code. It came stock with 410s.

jdanger- Be proud of 20+. The most I have ever got is 20.2mpg on a long highway trip going between 70-75. How fast (slow) were you going?

I've been averaging 14-15 in mixed driving more often 15 now that its warmer. Are you letting your engine warm up on the first start? How much are you using 4wd (we had a blizzard here 2 weeks ago so I had to use it)? Worst I have gotten was 12mpg and that was letting my truck warm up every morning, using 4wd and shifting too low.

wow, i have a 7 mile drive to work everyday and i take regular 25-50 mile trips on the weekends and sometimes i roll 150+ miles on the weekends. my daily commute and 25-50 mile trips are all back roads with stop signs and 45-50mph and my last 2 tanks with my toneau cover on and windows up netted me 23.5mpg and 25.4 mpg, and even when i drive with my windows down and back window open i can still get 21 if i'm not driving like a 16 year old:D

and this is in a 95 4wd 4.0 OHV ext cab. . .still new to the vehicle so maybe i'm experiencing a fluke?

EDIT: i run high test in my tank 91-93octane, it's just a habit i have gotten into with my previous vehicles

Bump from the dead. Rather then making a new thread I thought I would post my experience on how shocked I was when I filled up today. Converti g it to us mpg I got 12.8mpg 4.0 with 4:10 gears auto 4x4.... That was mostly city driving and short distance trips... Wow was I ever shocked. I drive a 6.4 Harley diesel for work and I get 13.6mpg and that includes the regen cycle it goes through. Almost does not seem fair that a little truck does so bad. But going from a 40mpg Honda to a truck is a change
