Ouch! For that price you could get yourself a good 9" or explorer 8.8 with a few add ons!

Don't forget that if something should ever go wrong with that rare FX4 axle that finding replacement axle shafts can become a nightmare, since so few were made and there really isn't a demand for them.

Thats a very good point that I always forget to bring up when it comes to these axles. They aren't the same width as the Expo axle, and certainly not the same as a Bronco/F150... They are their own length shafts.

OK then, the '94 Navajo will work and I can add the '95+ Discs.
I now have an 8.8 Axle, and I can add disc but... below ?!?!?!?!

Anyone have measurements, I know I am lazy.:dunno:

I am going to run an 8" rim with 285x75 tires I want the wheel/tire combo to stick out just a little. I planned the 8" with the existing axle width so I am now again up in the air.
 
Navajo/Mountainer/Explorer are the same models. Explorer axles are 1.5" wider than a Ranger, so 3/4" more on each side compared to a Ranger.

Rim width doesn't matter in regards to axle width, it's all about wheel backspace. The front of 98+ Rangers are wider than the rear...some people run spacers on their Ranger rear ends to make them look right....Putting in an Expo rear will get you that much closer to 'looking right' to some peoples eyes. I don't notice the difference on mine...but I'm pretty tall and have a nice tire to fender gap.
 
You really don't notice the added width that the explorer axle gives you, its just a suttle difference. If you're lifting wider is always better... even if you're not wider is better :)

The 93+ Ranger rear axles are 2" wider than the the 83-92's.

I know once you know about the width difference, it is very obvious on my '85 that the front is wider than the rear, but I don't think 98+ trucks share this problem as bad.
 
91-01 Explorer's and Navajo's have 31 spline 8.8's for a rear axle.

95+ have disc brakes.

Will the later model Disc Brake setups work on the 94 and down axles ?
 
Yes. I think there's even a how-to in the tech section on that.
