So I need a fuel pump for my '04 Ranger Edge, 3.0L, 2wd extended cab (125" wheelbase).

All the parts sites list 2 different motorcraft pumps for this truck. PFS-527 (includes gasket & seal) or PFS-318 (does NOT include gasket or seal). The one that includes the gasket & seal is cheaper. I don't get it. Does anyone know if there is a difference in the pump itself?

I haven't taken the original pump out yet. Should the part number on it?

I just took mine out, no numbers on it.. mine is an '88, so yours might be different..??

I had a hard time fining that part number too.. even the guy at the store didn't know which one was correct..

So what did you end up doing? Did you just guess? Or have you done anything yet?

When I got the truck, it had a bunch of extra parts with it. Among those parts, there were 2 used fuel pumps.

The smaller one is the same as the one that was in there, but I wound up using the bigger one anyway..

If it helps, here's what it looks like when it comes out of the tank..

Ford does stupid stuff like that. The one with the gasket is cheaper because they expect to sell more of them thus making a higher profit across the production.

I just bought a set of 4 axle U-bolts for a 31-spline 8.8. They are wider and bigger around than the ones for a 7.5. I paid $13.50 for a box of 4 for the 31-spline, but the smaller bolts were $15 and piece.

The pump won't have a useable part number on it.

I looked it up on partsgeek.com, the difference i cant tell, but this is what i found...

I STRONGLY recommend buying the OEM Motorcraft pump or something good like Carter. I've heard too many Airtex horror stories.

I know they are kind of an el-cheapo brand, but I have had pretty good luck with Airtex.

The HP pump in my truck is an Airtex (albeit old enough to still be American-made) and I've put a few dozen in customer cars after they balked at the OEM part price. None of those have come back with dead pumps yet either.

It has been my opinion for some time now that you cannot judge the quality of a whole product line by anecdotal evidence alone since nobody complains about a part or it's quality when it doesn't break. When it does break the first thing you hear is "This piece of crap is junk, it broke on me and left me sit and tried to kill my grandma."

That said, when available I will take Motorcraft over anything else. My Airtex pump was purchased because the factory pump gave out after 22 years of faithful and flawless service and the parts store that was close enough to walk to had it on the shelf.

None of the local auto parts stores have a pump for my truck on the shelf anyway. So I just plan to order a motorcraft. I guess I'll go for the PFS-527, as it comes with the gasket and is cheaper. RockAuto has it for $268.79.

Luckily I have 2 rangers (got a '96 4-banger as well), so I won't be stranded for a week. :icon_thumby:

$270 ? ? Holy Smokes! :shok:

Are you absolutely sure you need the pump? There are some wires that could make you lose fuel pressure too..

Make sure the ground that goes from the fuel pump relay to the battery negative is good.
On my '88, it's a black/green wire, and it was a simple fix.

Without that connection, I only had about 12 psi fuel pressure.

Good luck with yours..

Jim

Hold yore horses.....I just bought an Airtec from autozonnnnnnne for

68$ plus taxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

and the old OEM part had a number stamped on the side of the pump

yeah, I got a similar quote from Napa, but that's just the pump...

Was it a XXXX-YYYYY**-ZZ number or a XXXXX-YYYY number?

Most Ford parts have the engineering number stamped on them and those don't always cross nicely to an actual useable part number.
