Fuel Gauge and Odometer Problems

I bought a 1995 4-cylinder Ranger on Saturday for $2500, picked it up on Monday. 5 speed manual, and runs great. But, I have no idea how much gas is in it. The gas gauge does not work. I put 4 gallons in, and have no idea how much is still in it. I haven't used all 4 gallons yet, and don't have a clue how much was in it. So, I was going to fill it up and use the odometer to tell me how many miles I have before I need a refill. It was already at 0 because my brother hit the button. So I drove around a little and then noticed the odometer hasn't changed at all.

I searched here and it said the worm gear is broken on some and isn't such a hard fix. Another part was that it is on the transmission and like a $400+ fix.

As for the fuel gauge, I researched it some, and from what I got, I have to take the bed off, and look at the fuel pump. I am not going to take the bed off. I am sure there is another way to get to it, maybe by taking the gas tank off.

I looked in the manual for a fuse for the fuel gauge, and never found one (I went through the fuse panel page like 12 times). Is there one and I just missed it? or do I have to get to the fuel pump and either change it or clean the sensor off?
Also, is there a fuse for the odometer?

This truck is very good, I think it was very much worth the money. Once those are fixed, I will be very happy, as this is my first thing to drive. Might also have to replace the coolant.

Thanks for your time and hopefully I can fix this problem.

does the rest of ur dash work? such as spedo and battery and tach? if they do then it shouldnt be a fuse otherwise check the main dist block under the hood

Everything works but the odometer and fuel Gauge.

My fuel gauge has not worked since I got the truck. I just top up the tank often whenever it's convenient and note how much it takes. You can test the gauge without pulling the bed or dropping the tank if you can locate the gauge wires near where they enter the tank.

You can check the speedometer/odometer/trip odometer by spinning the trans end of the speedometer cable with an electric drill.

These tests should at least give you an idea of what's broke.:icon_cheers:

Definitely something to look into. Thanks for the info, might come in handy.

I dropped the fuel tank down outta the truck never even loosened a bed bolt. Just took off all fuel lines and vaccuum lines then took off the tank strapps and put a floor jack underneigth and lowered the sucker bought a fuel pump and problem solved didnt take me long at all. I think i used a fuel line tool its a special tool to detatch fuel line fittings you can get them at an auto parts store.
