fuel for my 4.0 swap

i swapped in a 4.0 in my 85 b2 former carburator and i'm thinking of using the fuel lines fuel tank and pump/sending unit from a 90 b2 with a 2.9 to make it all sorta factory like . is that gonna work and get me running?

I was told that it can be done by other people who have done it. BTW did the 4.0 liter motor bolt right up to the 2.8 tranny ( I assume it was a 2.8 liter and not a 2.3). And so was it a manual or auto? That info. would help me out later.

no not even a bell housing swap can be done. i used a manuel that usually comes stock with 4.0's but it all slid in no problems. used 4.0 motor mounts even used the newer hydraulic reservoir and hard line it all bolts up like it belongs there only had to put like a 1 1/2" spacer under one of the motor mounts to level it out a little... weird. easiest and smartist thing i did was swap the dash board in too. the engine bay harness plugs right into the entire dash harness which comes goes with the whole dash so no birds nest of wires to run inside the cab. just a few grounds and turn key. gonne need the steering colume and bracket with pedel assembly to but if you get a cheap/wrecked or free 4.0 truck manuel trans it's all there. super easy. except for this fuel thing. heh

From what ive read on therangerstation all 2.8 2.9 and 4.0 liters trannys are interchangable and the bolt paterns are the same. Im putting a 2.8 liter in my truck but the 2.3 liters bellhousing is different and i was trying to find out if i could take the bell housing off a 2.9 or 4.0 manual tranny will bolt up to my 2.8 liter and if the clutch assemblies from the 2.9 or 4.0 will work with the 2.8 liter. My tranny is a 1983 4 speed that is currently being turned by a 2.3 liter. And ya the dash thing im going to be doing is taking one out of an explorer (when I get the money) and putting in my ranger. But if all else fails, then Ill get the tranny out of a 2.8 liter and putting my truck and be done with it (i know where a few are at). The fuel thing your doing is very easy to do and take your time.

sweet! thanks for the fuel management help. it's been soooo long sine i swapped my trans i don't remember the bolt pattern lining up but i do remember paying 7 hundo for another trans cuz mine wouldn't work. I didn't investigate the bell housing swap too well tho .....i just discarded and got one that was a sure fit. so a may be wrong about that one

I'll probably go for a sure thing and get a complete 2.8 liter tranny from the junk yard unless somebody else tells me that all I have to do is a bell housing swap. Plus my dad knows the owner of the junk yard very well and gets a discount. Now about that a SAS swap i want to do...

oh best thing(depending on the application you want it for) i pulled a solid axle from a 70's full size ford coil spring front. grab everything you can... radious arms brackets steering linkage track bar the whole shabang. it'll take a little more fab then maybe a simple leaf spring design, not too much tho, but you'll get a better approach angle and better articulation in the long run. and it's cooler!!

The only time my truck sees four wheel drive is the winter and hunting. A SAS on my truck would be mainly for show (and maybe mudding one day).

oh leaf spring set up will be perfect then. you should craigs list your area. in the sf bay area i found a free set of half ton axles!!!!! i was like "where were those last year" would've saved me big time.

Well when the truck does get a SAS and while its off its "feet" Ill put a 4.0 liter or v8 in it one day...depends on if I have the money to do it. Want to get a Harley first.

So you revive a 3 year dead thread to ask a question that has A) been answered in this thread already, and B) is answered 1000 other times on this site?

No, a 4.0 will not bolt up to your 2.3L trans.
