fuel differences

I filled my Ranger w/ 89 octane here in NY Friday AM and headed for Cleveland OH. Un-eventful trip, just the way I like it. Around 340 miles from my house to Moms. I got 28.4 miles per gallon. I filled up in Cleveland , 89 octane,and headed for home on Saturday Afternoon. Again un-eventful trip. Checked milage for the return trip and come up with 32 miles per gallon.
It seemed like the truck was running better/stronger on the trip home than it ever has before. This is the first time I've put anything in it besides NY blended gas. I know that we get a different blend than the neighboring states, but never knew it would make that much difference. Now I want Ohio gas all the time, not just when I visit w/ Mom.

I wouldn't be real quick to attribute it to the gasoline, unless one of them was E10 and the other was pure. There are too many other variables, such as altitude change (more uphill one way and downhill the other) or head/tail/crosswinds that can make a surprisingly substantial affect.

A lot of gas stations have 89 octane fuel as their E10 fuel, at least out here. As a result the 89 octane costs the same as the 87 octane. E10 usually delivers worse gas mileage.

I would probably blame it on the wind. E10 is a possibility also.

Westbound headwind eastbound tailwind would be normal for most times of the year along that route.

I have driven I-90 to get my kids more times than I care to count since I got divorced ten years ago. I've seen at much as a 6 mpg difference depending on the wind. Sometimes it's downright brutal.

yeh 28 mpg is pretty sweet! That is about 10 more than I get...
