a lawnmower is different, they all run a governor that limits it to 3600rpm give or take max, it will adjust the throttle to keep that as the top speed, the throttle on a mower is selecting RPM, not throttle (that's why they go faster when you screw with the governing springs
)
like he said, if it wasn't safe for the engine to go that fast, they wouldn't let us go that fast in the first place. for optimum power, you want to go just past the power peak, so when it gets loaded harder, it'll still hold it, that and so when you shift you're still close to the peak...
I've said it before, I beat my engine for a good 80K miles, and it din't hickup, only pulled it to put the turbo engine in... need to get my beater truck together at some point...
