I have a 2000 Ranger 4.0L 4X4. On my way home yesterday my front passenger hub bearing assembly sepereated. the only thing holding it together right now is the axle shaft. It has front ABS with vacuum locking hubs. The build date is 11/99.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if so, how much of a pain it was to get the old hub out and replaced. also where would be the best place to get the parts. I did some price shopping and the best I could find was 145 for the hub assembly and 60 for the half shaft from Autozone.

Remove the brakes and discs. (Don't dangle the calipers!) Gently pry the tabs of the locking hub (the plastic part in the middle) away from the center column while rocking the locking hub gently back and forth. Try not to break the tabs. The black plastic locking hub will come off. Under where the black plastic locking hub was, there is a clip around the axle spline in the center of the hub area. Remove it. Disconnect the ABS wires. The hub is held on by three bolts in a triangular pattern. The axle will pull straight out after the hub is off, but may require a little persuasion. You will lose differential oil when the axle is pulled out, be sure to refill it.
You may not have to replace the half shaft.

it is pretty easy to pull them out there is a how to on it in the tech library under hubs or something like that...type on ranger hub bearing on google and then go to shopping results and there is a list of people that sell them.....down at the bottom there is a place called mac auto parts that has them for 119 i think for front abs...mine were 99 with out front abs. but i ordered my parts like 15 days ago and they still arent gonna be till the 7th it says but i ordered them during the holidays so...

I wont be able to re use the same axle shaft because it got so hot that the boot melted. the only thing holding the wheel on is the axle shaft. so I'm pretty sure if its ok now it wont be for too long.
