ok i have a 95 ranger its got 4.10 stock gears on it.. i recently got a rear end off a 88 ranger that has 375 and i got the front end off the same ranger.. i had to change the spline on the rear end so the drive shaft would bolt on

im wondering if the front end would be able to basiaclly bolt right on and be able to use it

'88 wasn't the correct year to get axles from for your '95, '93-'97 are the years you want ('91-'97 for the front axle).

The '88 axles are narrower than what you have now (that front is also weaker).

What's the reason for the swap anyway? Normally you'd want deeper gears, not taller.

Since he does have the 4cyl. He could and most likely does have the hybrid axle. The D28 carrier would work, but he'd have to swap it over to the D35 hybrid chunk.

yeah, why the gear change? 4.10's are the bare minimum for 4cyl and 31's in my opinion. I know, I have one. lol

well at the time my original stock rear end blew and the only rear end we could find for cheap was one off a 88 ranger.. and when i bough the truck the front end was blown already so we got a package deal both front and rear end

but my friend just totaled his mazda b2300 so im getting the front and rear ends from him for pretty cheap they are the stock 4.10s

Those should bolt right up. Right on!

If it's 93' to 95' it'll go right in.

That chunk outa the B2300 may be a hybrid though.

hm dunno.. the mazda is a 95

the only reason im debating putting in the stock gears is because the 88 rear end has detroit lockers in it and i like the posi lol

(im a gear newb... i can do engine, body and mechaincal, but know nothing about the gear system lol)

Well, if the 88 had detroits front and rear you can use both if you have the hybrid up front, because it's a D28 carrier.

The 88 would have used a full D28 axle and a 7.5.

1990-92 Ranger all had full D35 axles no matter the engine.

93-97 some had a hybrid that uses the D-28 Ring and Pinoin, and carrier with most(from what I've seen all) 4cyl 4x4's.

I'd get the lockers out of the 88, and put them into the 93 B2300 axles, and then just swap them over to you 95.

If you ever wanted to swap in a "true" D35 chunk you'd have to buy a new front locker.

ya im not sure if the front end has lockers but i know the rear end does

so what your saying is while both rear ends are out of the truck tear them apart and put the lockers from the 88 rear end and put them into the stock 95 rear end?

does TRS have a guide or somthing on how i could remove the detroit locker from the 88 rear end and put it in the stock rear end?

one more thing

would it be better to have full time posi in the front end.. cause i was thinking of lincon locking the front end.. i read the differentials for dummies and it sounds like having full posi rear end is bad for daily driving but great for off road, just wondering if it would be just as good as putting lockers in the front end?

If it's a D28 (or D28 hybrid) the only locker it could possibly have is a Lockright. There were never any others made for it.

The D28/35 hybrid is somewhat stronger than a straight D28, due to the larger D35-sized u-joints.

As for swapping the Detroit locker in the 7.5... it's a pretty involved process, you have to make sure the gear backlash is set to the same after you install it (the carrier bearing preload has to be maintained as well). It's not normally a job for the "backyard" mechanic, although it is possible to do if you have the correct tools and know-how.

Check to see if it IS a Detroit or not, if it turns out to be something like a Lockright instead, then you'd be in luck. These merely replace the spider/side gears in the stock carrier, and would be real easy to swap over just using common tools.

DO NOT lock a D28 though (lincoln or otherwise), you'll start busting shafts (on a hybrid, it'll be the 23 spline ends within the diff that break). Run the D28 open until you can find a D35 chunk to swap on there (4.10 D35s came under some '90-'92 4-cyl 4x4 Rangers).

ok when u say "chunk" u mean like the whole assembly inside the pumkin like the gears and what not?

The differential housing itself as an entire unit (aka, pumpkin, pig, chunk, etc.).
