I would think that a pressure test might tell you if the slipping is attributed to a bad valve body gasket? I would start there if a fluid/filter change shows no improvement. Just look around first and get a cost on a junkyard transmission so that you don't end up going over budget just trying to fix the one that's in the truck. If it were me and it came down to the transmission not being repairable while it's in the vehicle, i'd just get a junkyard transmission, go over it real good, then do the swap overnight or on a weekend.
 
outside of a fluid/filter change i wouldnt mess with a problematic auto trans, just get the parts to convert to a manual. automatics can be such a headache. some might make it to 200K and some might not pass 50k. sure there can be issues with a gearbox too, but overall they seem to be less troublesome in the long run.

I do not think that the gears have broken teeth because once it heats up it runs fine .......

i will just have to wait to see what it is when i pick it up
