Found lots of sludge during 2bbl carb rebuild - why???

disconnect the vacuum line to the egr and see if it idles better. The vacuum line that goes to the air horn is the egr bleed line and just pulls in filtered air to release the egr I believe its the orange tube if it gets plugged it will keep the egr open and cause running issues.

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/diagrams/1983vacuumhoseguide.jpg There is a nipple that is at a 45 degree angle on the bottom of the air horn the orange vacuum tube hooks up there I pulled it oof the solenoid and squirted some WD to clear the vacuum line to test it put your tonge on the egr vacuum fitting and give it gas you should feel vacuum to the egr and when you let off the gas the vacuum should go away. If you feel constant vacuum its in the solenoid or the bleed line somwhere. Alot of guys will not know where it goes and plug it as a vacuum leak. The computer will open the egr but will not be able to close it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on what to look for next. I have a list now of things to go check tomorrow.

Question - the vacuum diagram under the hood, and in the Chilton's, is a wonderful multi-color piece of art. But I can't figure out how to read the darn thing - what all the colors and dashed lines mean. I finally figured out that the faded three-letter acronym was "EGR" rather than "ECR", which just about had me pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the ECR was. Finally figured out it was the EGR, engine gas recirculation. Is there some kind of mystical Rosetta Stone required to read the rest of that darn thing? I sure haven't found it in the Chilton's, or online yet. Or maybe a magic decoder ring from a box of Cracker Jacks? Thanks all; if we get this truck running again it'll be thanks to all of you.....

MAN VAC- engine vacuum tree
A/CL- bimetal in air filter housing has two nipples one to engine vacuum the other to vacuum motor that opens preheater door
SA-FV check valve holds pressure in vacuum reservor (coffee can)
TCP- on front of carb nipple pointing up
ACV- thermactor large hoses one to CAT and the other to crossover pipe back of heads
BPV- large hoses shuts off air to thermactor
BV- float bowl vent down thru solenoid to vapor cannister.
CPVR- dotted line goes to back of egr spacer its the solenoid that pulls fumes out of the vapor cannister and into engine when running.
