i forgot to install the metal gasket that goes between the motor and tranny, will it be okay without this. i plan on replacing the tranny in a year. will it be okay without that for a year?

Tranny gasket?

Do you mean the plate?

if your starter quits engaging, you know why.

I did the same thing. If you remove all but the top two (Bell housing) bolts you should be able to slip the (I think it's called a dust shield) up between the block and flywheel. Be sure to back out the two bolts 'til there are only 2 or 3 threads holding to keep evreything from sliping too far apart.
If it's an automatic, I'd take the nuts off of the torque converter so you don't risk pulling it out of the tranny.
