It would be truely stupid for them to pump out a product that nobody wants.

Yeah they are actually.

The difference is that manuel trans are actually better then automatics, and they tend to have a group of diehard followers that only buy them. That is why they have lasted this long.

I can just imagine how many people would break their arms with cranks these days! I almost broke my thumb once with a crank....damn impluse didn't latch! I learned very quickly after that to keep ALL fingers on the same side of the crank!!!!

I've also seen guys thrown 30 feet or more when trying to start large open flywheel oil engines... usually the younger guys who aren't familiar with the engine and it's ignition point or who don't know that walking a hot tube engine flywheel to start it is a bad idea.

After cranking some very large, very stubborn engnes, I am happy to have electric starting.

All things considered though, slushboxes were already more complicated than a manual, now they have computer control and probably still don't quite match the fuel economy of a stick.
