Returning to subject. If the safety tech is required. There should be also be an OPEN standard for maintaining it. Thinking maybe it's time for OBD3. Then we could buy whatever brand of software and adapters we wanted to calibrate cameras, etc..

I don't smoke. I know that's a stretch to ask government to do something right, but they managed it in 96 for OBD2. Why couldn't we do a 3 with that level of mandated openness? Hell maybe even develop a standard format for the physical side of those while we're at it. It's be no different than the old 6054 headlights. You could sell it to politicians as the mandated safety they claim to want...

All that stuff has microprocessor controls and I bet it's already linked on can bus. It's probably already at the OBD II connector.We just don't have the software to access it.

I find it interesting but not surprising that OBD2 came out as "one standard to rule them all" by government mandate, things were great for about a year until all the manufacturers decided to comply to the bare minimum level and then just start stacking their proprietary crap on top again. I believe that's what you call obeying the letter of the law but not the spirit of it.

Of course, this goes right back to Ford CEOs statement: "you need so many special tools to safely work on these vehicles, I wouldn't dare try it"
