Ford doesn't want you to fix your own vehicle.

Many of us already know the story of little pickups, their great success, and why they have become a disappearing breed. We all know especially the Ford Motor Company's penchant for taking a pretty good thing, fussing with it, making that thing larger and larger, adding on more accessories and trim packages, until the very spirit of the original product has long since been gone.
Oh, like the $44,000 maverick? 🙄

Maverick still starts out a lot cheaper than that though.

Maybe.

Our 2024 Ram 2500 was $42k new.

A glorified focus shouldn't be on par with the price point of a truck, unless it's something truly special.

After an afternoon on the lot with a few mavericks, I can honestly say that they're nothing special.

Ford claims the Maverick has been sold out. I find it ironic considering Ford dumped the Ranger claiming nobody wanted a compact truck. Fords plan to make more money forcing people to buy larger more expensive F150's backfired when buyers switched to brands still offering smaller trucks.

The Maverick sold out at first, I don't think it has been since.

It has been a good seller though, my mother in law has a hybrid one and she really likes it.

And then they brought the Ranger back. Gave it a lot of hype the first year and then pretty much crickets. Yes, they updated it with the Bronco platform, but only because they already had it and the T6 was old when the Ranger was brought back.

While there is a priority with the current Ranger, it isn't a high one. It's just kind of there.

As if the older Ranger got a lot of love either...

The Ranger has never been something Ford really wanted to make IMO.

I got the impression that Ford made the Ranger because other manufacturers made smaller trucks.

I think that they did at first; then the bean counters pointed out how more profit was made on F-150's.

That's pretty much it.

The eighties were just weird, anyway.

I miss big hair, though.

Most definitely right about the bean counters. My son in law works at Ford. Years ago when I asked him why they were fazing out the Ranger for bigger and more expensive trucks, he explained, "same number of parts."

I see a lot of Mavericks of both generations floating around. They definitely have a market around me anyway.

And yet - at least in South Carolina - Rangers of all generations are still used by zoos, on golf courses, municipal services, universities, startup lawn care businesses, farms, loved by grandpa and driven like a horse & buggy (sorry but the speed limit is 45, not 25,  move), and I'm pretty sure have more of a presence here than F-150's off the interstate. Seriously, they're like Honda Civics.
