ford 2.3 crankshaft position sensor

oh my...i must correct myself now. advance auto parts calls this part a CRANK ANGLE SENSOR. so i guess i dont have a cam sensor after all. go figure...

if it's under the intake manifold where a distributor would go on earlier 2.3 rangers, it's a cam sensor. call it what you want to call it, it's the reason for the 214.

well it wasnt the reason for the 214 because i pulled the plug off it and ran around just the same as it was doing, skipping. so i am in the process of changing crank sensor....

don't think it'll make 214 disappear. 211 should be gone with a new crank sensor though. hope this solves your problem, you've got a lot of codes to troubleshoot.

unplug the regulator on the alternator. sounds weird but these are known for the alt to put out an a/c voltage which distorts the signals from the cam and crank sensors.

do this while its running? or for how long?

ok, finally i have managed to clear 5 of the 6 codes. the truck runs much better, but i still have the 214 code. i would assume this is the cam position sensor as i replaced the crank position sensor and got rid of the 211 code. any ideas? and does changing cam sensor just involve unplugging the old one and plugging new one in? thanks all.

here's a thought, has the timing belt been changed? on the early years of the DIS the aux shaft just drove the oil pump so it's alignment didn't matter, but when the cam sensor came into play it mattered again, have you checked the alignment of the cam pulley?

the cam positioning sensor came out in 1994 in California cars only......for all other states it came out in 95

*your issue might also be the ICM

modelageek, i can read you the part number off the cam sensor on my 94 model ranger if u like? it fits in the hole where the distributor used to be.

oh yeah, the timing belt was changed out and degreed in by a local mechanic who has built many 2.3 engines for his late model dirt track cars. i trust him. so once again, the only code that remains is 214. crank sensor change took care of code 211 which is pip failure. 214 says cylinder id failure????

10stroken if you read me the part number then that would suggest you have a CA truck and I am not sure why that would matter now. You never followed up on Envious's idea! This thread is so F'ed up. did you replace the ICM with a new one?

cylinder ID failure sure sounds like a misaligned cam sensor to me...

like I said, the '89-94 rangers generally don't have cam sensors so maybe he assumed that it didn't have one so he didn't align that pulley, it's an easy mistake for someone that's dealt with the engine... and couldbe worse to check
