We've always thought that the A4LD is a fine transmission when an external oil cooler is attached, but there's always room for disagreement.
BWwwwhahahahahahahahah...
WRONG kind of "Face-Palm" guys... That kind of stupid requires that someone first slap them for making it, then their mother for having raised a stupid child then their maternal grandmother for raising a daughter that didn't have the sense to DROWN that aforementioned stupid child befoire their profound stupidity became public (let alone published)
I'm all for defending the A4LD when it works but when it starts to fail it is a slippery slope from there. I'm on the losing side with my current transmission but we shall see how the next one is after a proper rebuild and upgrade.
What the #$@& bill. 4wheeler mag is way over the board, and for most of it's subscribers, what they build and play with is a pipe dream. They need to come back down to earth and do some more grounded builds, IMO.
If they knew anything, they'd know this:
The A4LD is a french built piece of crap.
The Later and last year of it is a bit better, 94'....but still a F$&% up^.
The even later 4r44e are just as big pieces of poo, but electronically controlled.
The 5r55e's are the best of the crap heep, and can be made to last. Just have to flush the fluid every 30K, FROM NEW and use max life or synthetic.
That being said, a piece of crap and be preserved if you keep it maintained and preserved. Just saying.
ive had a couple of a4lds. one in an 86 ranger that was toast and slipped like old lady on a banana peel. the one in my black 89 b2 wouldnt engage till about 1500rpm and when she engaged she would almost do a wheelie if it was in 4lo. the one in my 94 dont work right when its cold. and sometimes goes to around 1100rpm before engaging.
so what im trying to say is: manual trans ftw (specificly m5od, ive had decent experience with a 146 too though, 145s are pretty much junk.)
I have had two, the first died a terrible death, the second served me well for 8 years before it was pulled for an engine swap. They were the weakest of the weakest transmixer, with a none-to-healthy 2.8.
this is why i read the TRS magazine before either of my issues show up (fourwheeler and petersens four wheel), because all the money in the world cant buy you the experience that TRS has with RBVs. when i read their article i was like WTF are you guys smokin? one of your staff members even has a SASed ranger and you guys still got it wrong? that being said, i mostly enjoy the pictures in the magazines, especially the ones where guys are welding and cutting and doing general fab with ablsolutely no safety equipment on, not even glasses! but hey, its there eyes and not mine, so ill still be able to read their magazine even when they cant.
