i am in the process of swapping in a fm146 in place of my a4ld. i was wondering what i am going to do to keep the gear lube in the trans and atf in the transfer case? thoughts apreciated. i was alos wondering if it would be alright to run atf in the trans instead of gear lube and if not why?

The gear oil in the tranny and the atf in the t-case are filled seperately. Run atf in an fm146 and your tranny won't last long.

Although the trans (some of them) will not hold fluid without draining out the tailshaft, once bolted to the transfer case it will be fine. The transfer case is also sealed at the front so they will not be able to mix with one another.

But, the RIGHT answer is to drain them.

You don't want to move an FM146 bolted to a transfer case. They are manageable separately, but far too heavy together. Each of them are around 80 lbs (transmission slightly more, transfer case slightly less).
