FM146 inspection

I got all the parts for an A4LD to FM146 swap in storage. I dont know anything about the condition of the FM146 though. What problems should I look for inside this thing before I start the swap?

Check for metal shavings in the fluid and on the pan. Check gears for wear and broken or chipped teeth. Check bearings for play. Make sure it shifts good. Mainly just look it over.

The 4x4 trannys don't have a rear seal. The front seal is on the front cover. You have to remove the bellhousing and the front cover. Just tap the old one out. Put the new one in,reassemble and you should be ready to go. There is an exploded view in the Tech Library under transmission ID.

I'm not real sure, but if the bolt holes line up, I don't see why not.
About the seal, if you're going to take the bellhousing off anyway, just pull the front cover and look at it. You could go ahead and change it for piece of mind. You also might want to replace the clutch and throwout bearing while it's apart. If your luck is anything like mine after you get it all back together one or the other will go out.

The bell housing probably would bolt up, but the slave connection it up towards the top on a 145 and its on the side on a 146. I'm unsure if the slaves are the same, they are the same for the 146 and M5OD.

All Mitsu and TK bellhousings interchange. You just need the right bell for your combination.
You could pull the bottom cover and carefully inspect the cluster for chipped or broken teeth.

the bell housings will swap over but you need to change the front bearing retainer. the fm 146 bolts to the front bearing retainer and i believe the fm 145 is held between the the bell housing and the front bearing retainer.

I think that he's saying that on one the bell housing bolts directly to the outside of the bearing retainer (the very front of the transmission. On the other the bearing retainer sandwiches the bellhousing to the transmission....at least thats the best that I can understand. I'm not too familiar though.

I would suggest putting a new input shaft bearing on the 146 before you install it, they are prone to go.

My bad. I hadn't realized the newer model FM-146's were different. When did they change. The tech library shows '88 to '92. And the parts list doesn't show a rear seal, just the front input seal.

I'm pretty sure the T-case seals the rear of the tranny in the 4x4 and a seal on the extension housing on the 2wd.
