How difficult is flywheel ring gear replacement? My buddy has an '84 with the 2.8 V6 and needs this done...It's missing a few teeth and starting sounds brutal.

Just buy a new flywheel.

i belive u just heat the outer part of the ring and hit it off and i little nice on installing the new one, but i take mine to a buddy at his shop much easier :)

NO need to heat it up to remove it. Just tap it off with a punch.
Sometimes if the gear is not to chew up you can just turn it around. When replacing the ring on to the flywheel that's when you need to heat the ring gear with a torch. Don't need to get it red hot, but just place the heat around the whole ring so that it will expand. Now place the ring back on the flywheel and let it cool off so that it will lock in place.
(The complete flywheel must be removed from the crankshaft in order to remove the ring gear. For those who do not know)
