Fly Tyers?

Hell... a pack of 25 good steelhead hooks are probably $6 to $15 these days. Hard to go wrong with a couple bins of stuff for $10.

When fashion people started putting feathers into people hair... the price of hackle went up to prices most fly tiers couldn't afford... I blame this guy...

Fly tying can get weird. There's always that one guy at the stream who spends 30 minutes digging around in the water picking up bugs. Then goes back to his truck and pulls out a 1,000 dollar mobile tying bench and starts tying flies that precisely match the current hatches. Always seem like they are way more interested in tying than actually fishing.

Seen those guys... and I feel if that is their thing.... so be it. I tend to do all my tying through the winter... and when I get to the river it's time to fish. If what I brought doesn't catch them... the guy up in the parking lot matching the hatch is usually willing to share... I've made a couple fishing buddies that way.

I'm anal about my hooks. Most cheap hooks are dull as crap out of the package and I have to spend hours sharpening them all. I usually only buy gamakatsu and I still touch them up and debarb them myself.

I've made flies from my old dogs (always saved locks of their hair.) Made some bucktails when I shaved my beard too.

I'm picky about my hooks too... Teimco gets the bulk of my hook money (they also make Cabelas hooks). But I do like Mustad signature hooks too. Most are sticky sharp right out of the pack.

Hooks are curved

Whoa!

Are those yours?

No no, that is how people used to fish before there were steel hooks.

I thought Eric would have remembered them from his youth but I guess not...

Native American... maybe Inuit

I can tie a nice Windsor knot in my neck tie.
