floatation Package.

How does one make a Ranger float anyway? Styrofoam?

well i would gues, that it has somthing to do with all the extra plugs and weather stips. But i don't know I will have pictures up soon and hopefully someone can lend their two cents.

never seen where ford offered it. must be an aftermarket thing for boat yards or something. is it filled with foam? even then its nose heavy....

but my truck sort of floats ok....on 44's. but it sinks down in the front under throttle. no motorboatin...

No its not filled with foam. When my dad bought it back in 86 the dealer gave him a list of features the truck had, and sure enough floatation package appeared on it. I am pretty sure it shows up on the build sheet somewhere too, but thats just going off what my dad said.

As for motor boatin, no one has ever been in it when it was floating. So no clue.

hmmm.

i bet its wired for a dc fridge unit. does it have a 160 amp alt?

is it a 4x4 or 4cyl 2wd stripper?

let me put it another way.

i could pick my lil 2wd truck up in the back when i was younger and could just get one side of my stock ext 4x4 cab...the back of my, or rather any shortbed reg cab 2wd ford ranger truck floats easy. 35's in a running river puts my heavy 4x4 out control...just bobs around.

slow rising water could allow it to rise easy enough it seems till you tried to move it.

its not intentionally a floater unless its sealed and foamed.

Maybe if the bed was sealed where water couldn't seep in? But even then it seems that the engine would more than offset the buoyancy of the bed.

Well for 1 its a long bed ranger. I am as confused as you guys.
And it is a 2wd 4 cylinder. As for the alternator, i don't remember i will have to check it out for you in the morning.

Hmm, what if you take a lifted 4x4 Ranger and fit some 44's onto it then remove the rear driveshaft so that just the front wheels spin? If you can get the front wheels to start skimming on the water it may start moving without dropping the front end into the water.

There gotta be some truth to this. Most vehicles will actually float, just depends on how long. FWD cars usually sink the fastest, with all the weight in the front. A well sealed truck could stay a float. About a year ago, Oklahoma had severe rains and floods. One couple drove their big black Dodge truck on flooded roads. Amazining, the truck stayed afloat until they bailed out of the windows and then it sank quikly.

Its all a matter of displacement and being well sealed. To help the front end stay floating better, you could easily place a empty sealed container along the inside of the front bumper, and weather strip the tailgate.

The cab of the truck is pretty much water tight. If any water gets in it just slushes around in the bottom of the truck. Hence the rust holes in the floor. Water just sits in it.
