Flickering charging light

Update. Tightenting the torx screws did nothing. I replaced the voltage regulator and there was no change. I replaced the stator connector as well and it helped significantly. Still a little voltage oscillation. From what i read elsewhere resistance in the stator wire can cause these symptoms. Where does it connect to from the one wire connector?

Im aware the wiring diagram shows the stator wire goes back to the voltage regulator connector. I ask because i have the external voltage regulator and it appears to have different wire colors that are all unique. My stator wire is black/yellow

I am not entirely sure, but I can tell you that my voltage gauge in my truck has been unstable for years. Everything is in perfect working order.... I suspect there is a bad ground somewhere which is why the need jumps. But the new stator connector should have eliminated the flickering charging light.

Have you tried the wiggle test? Have someone watch the light as you fiddle around with wires and connectors. See if you can get the light to respond that way? Some intermittent grounds are hard to find probably a wire has worn through and intermittently touching ground?

The stator wire is without a doubt the cause still. It still has some play in it but nowhere near as much. My voltages are no longer peaking as high or low but still flickering. Im gonna see if i can make the connection any tighter by making the connector smaller with pliers. Im afraid the stator plug on the alternator is worn and causing the wire to be loose.

If you find that is the problem, you might be to remove the connector from the plug and crimp it down so it is a bit more snug. Or of you can get the alternator out of the truck, get a little bit solder on the terminal you are plugging into to tighten up the connection.

Thats a great idea about the solder. But I dont really want to take the alt off unless i have further problems.

Well i took the alternator off and soldered a wire straight to the stator plug. I stuffed the gap in the connector with electrical tape to keep it solid. No more posessed voltage, and the truck drives much smoother

EDIT: I used 14ga wire to be sure resistance was as low as possible as well as making a more solid connection to the bare metal pin.

thanks for the update...I might do that with mine as my battery light is still flickering...not that I've had the time or energy to go out in the freezing cold to do anything other than try to start it periodically...but...that will be done with the warm weather.
