First Christmas star in 400 years tonight

Very interesting phenomenon. The wife and I parked on a hill at a nearby school and had a fantastic view until someone came up and turned on the lights at the track (behind us) so they could walk.

We still got some great pictures.

I just got a great view of it out my front door. They were so close I could not see the second planet very well with the naked eye. My binoculars confirmed there is a second planet there. What a great Celestial event. Back to look at it again.

Couldn’t see anything here, too much cloud cover.

I was fighting jet contrails/haze. I literally just got the tripod mount for it yesterday so this is my first time taking pictures of stars period. My old camera was okish with the moon but couldn't do stars at all.

Canon SL3 with the kit lens, VEO tripod I snagged two weeks ago and a cheap Amazon remote trigger. I googled how to do it and fiddled with it on the fly.

I really can't wait for the really clear nights when it gets cold out.

With binoculars could see Saturns rings
& at least a couple of the moons. Cool stuff.

That must have been very strong binoculars. Mine could just show a hint of rings around Saturn.

Like pretty much everything else in 2020... this was overhyped. We saw it the last 3 nights. A bright star with another not so bright star close to it.

I don't care, I had fun with it.

unfortunately it was very cloudy here. I heard from my Dad that with a telsescope you could easily see some of Saturn's moons. I am hoping for some clear skies tomorrow. May have to get the telescope out :)

Excellent results for "learning on the fly".

I looked online to see where and when to look. So I took out my compass and found the proper direction at the right time and looked up. All I saw was a ceiling fan? :dunno:

With the wind blowing. I had trouble keeping the binoculars steady. My eyesight isn't the greatest either. Using the binoculars with my glasses isn't great. Without the glasses, I can focus the binoculars better. But they don't correct for my astigmatism. Maybe I'll try with my camera setup tomorrow night. I can set up with a 400mm lens and a doubler, so effectively 800mm focal length. With my tripod, that should get pretty decent results.

It's been cloudy and a raining drizzle here pretty much all day. Southwestern PA has never really been known for it's clear skies any way.
