firebird

nope it has a mild 350 in it. he said if i get it he has a fresh chevy motor thats built a bit more then his montes that i can have.

anyone got any ideas for something that i can build cheap? or with parts that are easy/cheap to get?

That $200 roller Firebird if the body is in good shape with a Chevy drivetrain swapped in. Fox body Mustangs don't do much for me, they look too much like old Excorts. If you are going to be racing a car of that vintage (and especially price range) regaurdless of brand the engine will not be a barn burner from the factory anyway. $200 is barely over what the car is worth to a scrapper, and if you had him down to $200 with it running decent he might come down more now that it isn't.

GM parts are much cheaper and more plentiful than Ford bar none. I went to a swap meet a couple weeks ago and just about everything there was Chevy, it was really kind of depressing trying to find Ford stuff. I did snag a set of aftermarket wheels for my Ranger, but I think even they came off a Jeep (four closed center caps and 4" backspace)

I had a 301 in my '78 Grand Prix. Loved the Grand Prix. Would give anything to have it again. The 301 on the other hand is another story.

You won't (at least back in my day...) find perfomance parts for the 301. Pontiac did turbocharge the 301 in the T/A though. I use to wonder what an intercooler would do to help those motors.

Cheap and easy to get............

I hate to say this, but chevy parts are always the cheapest.

I've never jumped on that bandwagon, so since this site is full of blue oval, I'd say an early Fox body Mustang. They have a huge following and you can probably find a lot of good deals and used parts.

Remember that how fast you go depends on how much you can spend.

Personally, I like the old GM G-body cars from the 78-87 era. I'm also a Pontiac enthusiast which meens I'd probably find me an old G-Body Grand Prix and resto-mod it in to a production appearing muscle car.

.......but that's just me.

you can buy a lot of chevy parts, but the bottom line is you are still going to get passed by a ford! any fox mustang could whip up an any camaro of the same year. even an iroc z gets smoked by a mustang gt or lx, and thats with a smaller motor and narrower tires! once you get into fox mustangs you see how easy it is to find parts. and you would never even think about a bowtie again!

well i went and looked at it for shits n giggles. it turns out its a v6 the same one that is in a....s10....my friend will sell me a327 thats bored .30 and is ready to roll. i just need to get the stuff for it (Cam,Intake,Carb,Rockers,) he also has a pair of 305 heads that are ready so i can buy those off him, he also has a 2500 stall conveter, and a fresh th350 with a B&M shift kit with 0 miles on it that he will sell me. the wheels and rubber are worth the 200. it comes with extra fenders and all the inside panels.

If i get it i will put a posi in the rear, add those heads, cam, intake, carb, headers, exaust, rockers. i will yank the heater,a/c,radio and all the inside stuff ill be adding oil, volt, water tem, temp, tranny temp tach and speedo gauges along with maybe a turbo gauge. i might try to pice together a turbo set up from a audi s4 turbo/inter cooler i have.the body is straight and has one patch of surface rust by the t-tops. i will also sand it down and then rattle can it flat black. he will also let me borrow a set of raceing slicks that he bought but isnt gonna use. there all mounted and ready to go too.

That 350 is a nasty critter in the right hands and they all but grow on trees, I woudn't underestimate one.

Keep us posted on it, it sounds like a fun project. I wouldn't mind getting a late 70's-early 80's Camaro to play with someday.

Hmmm... you said T-tops. Stiffening the frame may be a good idea then, those t-top bodies were kinda flexy, especially if you play rough with them. I've seen them bend or crack where they join the 1/4 panel and roof.

Still, its a cheap body that will swallow any size V-8 made. They put 455's in some of them.

a 350 is still a 350, you can get a lot more from a 5.0, even with less displacement. ive seen 5.0 blocks getting more than 1100hp. 350's 800hp at the most. a 350 is better than a 305 or a v6 of any sort, but i would take a ford over a chevy any day. i forgot to mention besides my mustangs, i also have a 1952 chevy (2800lbs) with a 383ci chevy (350 bored and stroked), but my 347ci will blow it away, how bout compair a 351 ford to a 350 chevy? its almost cruel. :nono: the bottom line is you can put less into a 5.0 and have it beat a 350 if you put the same amount of money into it.

The big thing that makes the 302 shine is that they put it in a tiny car compared to what GM had.

well ive really thought about it. i still gotta finish my ranger "truggy" up.....i still got quite a bit to do on it. so i think ill just get money gathered for it..maybe one day ill have a hot-rod
