Fender trimming or more lift?

No worries its not a big deal. I flexed my truck out and I dented the front fender because the tire rubbed on it. I need to trim it. What would you suggest to do to trim them? I was going to start off with cutting the factory flares off the fenders and trimming the plastic inner fenders. I was planning on using a sharpie and painters tape to mark the line.

So I just cut one fender. I cut the flare off and now I am wondering what everyone did with there inner fenders? Mine is just hanging there and looks like crap. I would still like to keep some protection from dirt into the engine compartment. What did everyone do?

As you see I basically just left mine there.
To keep it from being all floppy, I put large sheetmetal screws with washers through the plastic fender into the firewall (it's the screw seen right at the bottom of my top pic). Up at the front I did the same again into the metal inner fender with a smaller screw & washer. Been that way for a little over 7 years now.

To trim them I used thin masking tape to mark a line about halfway up the factory flare, then used a Sawzall with a fine-tooth blade to cut alongside the tape.
