This paper is a VERY informative read, and will settle a lot of arguments concerning which oil is better...some oils that I thought would have been some of the best, didnt fair as well as some of the others. For example, Royal Purple failed a bunch of tests, and wasnt even close to the top of the list, as I would have initially expected.

Grab a coffee/beer/iced tea and have a read.

Here is a RANK of the BEST gear oils.

1. AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90
2. Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W-90
3. GM Synthetic Axle 75W-90
4. Castrol SYNTEC 75W-90
5. Red Line Synthetic 75W-90
6. Pennzoil Synthetic 75W-90
7. Valvoline SynPower 75W-90
8. Castrol Hypoy C 80W-90
9. Torco SGO Synthetic 75W-90 with Torco Type G LS Additive
10. Valvoline High Performance 80W-90
11. Pennzoil Gearplus 80W-90
12. Royal Purple Max-Gear 75W-90
13. Mopar Synthetic 75W-90 with Mopar LS additive
14. Lucas 75/90 Synthetic

Thats right...some of the most expensive gear oils are the worst.

Agreed, but it seems pretty legitimate.

I have the same issues with it being conducted by ASMOIL. Granted, they make some good stuff, but it's not surprise a test conducted BY them would have their prpduct at the top of the heap.

one day Im gonna do a man test for women and i wont be at hte top just to prove Im legitimate and honest. LOL Then Im gonna do a test test of all the tests like the one above and list them in order of integrity and honesty and list myself at the top, then see what kind of responses I get LOL. Amsoil will be second.

it would be more believable had the testing been done my an independent lab rather than Amsoil. just my $.02.

:agree:

No surprize there. One of the main componets of gear oil is sulfar. Amsoil is suppose to have sulfar as there main componet in motor oil. Thou, that is info from a Royal Purple dealer.

Either way, I have seen the results with my own two eyes of Royal Purple vs. any major shelf brand (except Amsoil, store didn't carry it).

Sweet stuff...I like the results considering I'm putting in some AMSOIL 75w-90...not Severe Gear. But still...Thats an awfully in depth study for rigging results...If I were AMSOIL and trying to make myself look good I would make up a one page deal...how many people who are just looking to change oil are going to analyze all that? Just saying...most people are impulse buyers

If it were going into my heart valve, I would be interested.

A truck can make 100 years on cheap axle lube, no problem.

:icon_rofl:

I buy valvoline synpower. I bought it cause it's middle of the road, and the fact that I developed a habbit of only putting valvoline products into my truck. I can buy a quart of this stuff for $6 at the local Autozoo. I like the way my truck rides.......and it's better than other stuff that breaks $10 a qt.

Other than the oxidation filter patch procedure, performance testing was conducted by an independent laboratory.
Physical-property testing (viscosity, viscosity index, pour point and foaming after oxidation) was conducted in-house.
A notarized affidavit certifying that the results are accurately reported is included in Appendix A.

Some companies pour their money into advertising, while others pour it into R&D.

That makes me feel a bit better.

I did a temp gig last year for an auto glass wholesaler. The boss ran AMSOIL products in every one of out 5 trucks (4 Chevy 2500HD's and an Isuzu 4500). The trucks ran for 20 hours a day, 5 days a week. 25,000 miles between oil changes and they still ran like new! Each of the trucks had 275,000 miles on them when they got replaced. Never one iota of problem.

i agree, seems biased. oh btw, i conducted a study on who the smartest man in the world is, here's the list:

1. ME
2. stephen hawking
3. bill gates

I've seen a lot of so-called oil and lube studies where scAMSOIL comes out on top, then if you read the fine print you see the study was sponsored by scAMSOIL.

That being said, I don't think it's bad stuff, I just don't like the MLM sales technique and I think it's overpriced.

You can get lube and oil tested yourself here for $22.50:
