Explain to me what "packing the bearings" means

Forgot to mention, I use the bearing packer that forces grease thru the cage and around the rollers....it flushes out the old grease pretty well.

As an interesting side note, I've read that spinning a freshly washed bearing really fast using compressed air is bad for them.....just other DIY'ers, no professional warnings; I can dry them without spinning them anyway.

I learned about cheap bearings too....I chased a vibration for a while because I just KNEW the new bearings couldn't be crappy LOL.

EDIT; did a web search, first hit was at Timken's site...they say never spin a bearing with compressed air. Good enough for me.

Yep. Not worth saving a couple of dollars to buy the cheap stuff. I use the Valvoline high temp bearing grease. Black with kind of a green tint to it. Works great. I offroad in mud and water so repacking bearings has kind of become second nature.

I used the valvoline grease a few times, and it seemed to break down in the az summers. So I found this lucas thick and tacky, it is red and sticks to everything. I have never had a issues with it. ever since my road trip where the bearing siezed to the spindal. talk about ruining a good day skiing. I buy good grease and good bearings.

I saw a guy spinning a bearing with a nozzle mounted to an air chuck right on the wall of a Motor T shop once. He was having a good ol' time--I think it was a bearing out of a 5-ton, pretty big maybe 6" across or more. It was sizzling fast. Then, BANG, the thing exploded and filled the air with rollers. I don't know why the knucklehead wasn't hurt.

^^that^^ is the main reason never to spin bearings with air

For $10 you can buy new bearings so why use the old ones? Last time I did mine the whole shebang cost me about $200 for new rotors, bearings, and pads...

...one thing I NEVER figured out, when you buy a new rotor, you get the cupped bearings pressed in, but if you are to buy the roller cone bearings, you must buy a "matched set" roller/cup assembly, like WTF, shouldn't the rotor come with the roller bearings? :icon_confused:

dude you must buy better rotors than me. cause the set I just bought a vatozone I had to put a new set a baerings in including pressing the races in.

I got my stuff at NAPA, the old timers say NAPA has the best brake parts.

Yeah man the races were already installed into the hubs, I've never bought one that wasn't.

I can see autozone doing somthing like that!

One story about Autozone was they had in their ads, a engine hoist on SALE, I went to AutoZone, asked about the engine hoist, and they could not even get it! I mean not even order it at ANY price! CRAZY, wtf why they put a ad in the paper, unbelievable!

Really I buy only the "disposables" at Autozone, fluids, etc. The only thing I buy there is the Mechanical fuel pumps, Autozone carries MASTER fuel pumps, made by Airtex Products in Fairfield IL, that is where my Dad works, so yeah, other than that it would have to be a "gotta have it now" part, when NAPA is closed.

Some of autozone's stuff is pretty good. Usually the "Duralast" brand parts are pretty decent and almost all of them carry a lifetime warranty. There is no better part than the one you only have to pay for once.

I've always had to install the bearings myself...Canadian Tire sells them separately so they can either charge you the labour to install them or make extra on all the added stuff you have to buy to complete the job...
