I have a 94 4.0 v6 ranger that is turning over but combustion is just not starting. I have tried numerous things to get it starting, I have checked all the fuses, checked battery voltage, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the crank position sensor checked for fuel pressure, and checked the coil pack. I tested for spark with and inline spark tester at a couple of the plugs and had no spark. I've talked with a mechanic and one thing he suggested was the timing chain is messed up in some way. Is this plausible? and is there anything else i can check before taking the hole front of my engine apart?

Your spark plugs would still spark even if the timing was off. It may not spark at the right time but there would be spark. It's unlikely that all 6 plugs or wires would fail at the same time. Still sounds like the coil fromt what you're describing. How did you test it?

Outside of a diagnostic machine you can ohm the coil but it's not an absolute. I've always recommended to my customers when in doubt about the coil at that age replace it. It's less than $90 and with 15 years on it ya might as well. I have rarely seen late model coils just go poof though. Usually they degrade with warning signs. It's a possibility but it may be the PCM. Now those will go poof! lol (Sorry, it happened to me before.)

I took the coil pack off my buddy's truck because hes got a 93 of the same engine and put his coil pack on mine and it didn't start.

It didn't just not start all of a sudden. It started not starting now and then and became more frequent till it stoped all together. And I had someone hook up a scanner and it could find no codes even though its been throwing the check engine light since I bought it last fall.

I'd lay odds it's the PCM then. A pisser to get out the first time but not after some practice. Be sure to get all the numbers off the old one before getting the new one.

Oh, have you done a fuel pressure test yet??

I have checked for fuel pressure and i know I'm getting fuel

turns over just like it would if i were normally starting it, combustion just does not start

I replaced the eec relay and she started right up, thanks for all the suggestions

It is a different electrical system but I had the same type symptoms on a 2.9. It would go dead going down the road once every several weeks, then once a month, and so on. Got to the point where some days it would not start. Come back the next day and run just fine. I switched out the ign. module, on the dist on a 2.9, and it has not failed to start in about two months.
