Engine rebuild

i have a small question. I have never rebuilt an engine before, by myself. I want to know when you have a machine shop bore and engine and do head work, if they sell you all the parts you need to build the engine back up/or do you have to buy your own seperate parts. I guess i really want to know if you need to measure all your parts, send to machine shop, then measure again before install. Can someone explain. I have been around cars all my life but never rebuilt and engine. I am sure i would be alright but i am just asking.

it depends on the machine shop and what you want to do. some people prefer to pick their own engine internals to run specific parts. some people just want the motor to run and dont feel like dealing with tracking down engine parts. be advised that the shop may charge you for getting the parts for you.

What motor are you lookin to rebuild?

Depends on how modified you want it..............

After disassembly of coarse

1st: Take the crank to a machine shop & have it miced, if it's still within
specs, then have them polish it.....if not, then they will have to turn
it to true it up, if this happens....then you will have order appropriate
bearings (10 under / 20 under etc)

2nd: If your goin to bore it, then order the appropriate pistons (10 over,
30 over, 40 over etc), & rings, then take those to the machine shop &
they will bore the block to match that set of pistons.
When a machine shop bores a block, they hot tank it, this wastes the
cam bearings, so you will have to have them install the new ones you
order with your kit.
You will have to have them install your NEW pistons on your connectin
rods.

3rd: Have the machine shop freshen up your head(s), unless you have the ability to do em
yourself. I personally don't like to do them, so I definitely farm em out to a reputable
shop!

Other than those few things, it's pretty much a clean it all up good & reassemble with your new parts (cam, lifter, gaskets, timin chain & gears, etc)

+1 is your engine dead/smoking or just doesnt have the balls it used to have? you may be able to just freshen up some parts w/o having to gut the whole thing, may just be able to tear it down mic everything just do minor repairs (ie crank and pistons/cylinders are fine minor wear, but bad valve guides or burnt valves, repair and replace.)

Focus on the heads if it's not using oil.
You can get a rebuilt 2.3 under 1000.00
and a rebuilt head for around 200.00 delivered.
