Engine-driven on board air?

Has anyone successfully installed a york style compressor on the 4.0 engine without getting rid of the stock AC compressor?

I just finished installing electric onboard air, and my buddy just shamed my newly-installed system when he started his jeep for 10 seconds and said "my tank is full." Meanwhile my little electric compressor is still "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" for the next 5 minutes.

Now I want to switch to a york compressor. Is it possible? Seems pretty cramped under there to me, but I'm wondering if it has been done.

IMHO, I hate AC. Its just a PITA to deal with.

I agree, I'd do it the same way you suggested too.

I've been considering how to go about doing this as well, just never really put full effort into it.

Oh, and BTW, our A/C compressors do not like to be run like air compressors because they don't get properly oiled, thus the reason for the York.

I suspect that the easiest way to do OBA is to do it in conjuction with a body lift. I did a 2" body lift on my choptop and now there is considerable more room under the hood, it might be possible to rig up a bracket on top of things and just get a long enough belt (I'm still undecided as to if I want A/C in it or not - the previous owner removed it but after driving it on a hot muggy rainy day, it would have been nice to have cold air coming out the vents as I'm not overly excited about the prospects of getting wet when I'm driving).

I have heard the same thing about the Ford compressor. I just bought the A/C bypass pulley and was going to pull mine and all the other A/C stuff BUT I think I might wait to see if someone knows of a way to use the Ford compressor and oil it to keep it alive. So I will sit back and see what the experts say. If it cant be done then I'm pulling it.

About the oil issue - refrigerant and refrigerant oil is miscible, and the oil flows with the refrigerant. In our compressors, there is no oil reservoir in the compressor and it relies solely on the circulated oil for lubrication. The York automotive compressor has an internal oil reservoir that can be checked and re-filled. This is that oil issue you hear about when converting an automotive a/c compressor over to an onboard air compressor. With either setup youre going to want a coalescing filter (condenses oil and it can then drain back to the compressor) which is basically like a catch can on a pcv system on a turbocharged car. To oil the compressor, you basically buy one of these - http://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/air-tool-accessories/38-oil-fog-lubricator-68233.html on the inlet side of the compressor and then run the oil line from your coalescing filter back to the tool oiler.
