I use engine foam cleaner (autozone, advance auto, etc). Open the hood, disconnect the battery, and cover up anything electrical or that has an opening to the engine. Spray on the cleaner a few times, scrub it up in any necessary areas and then rinse it down. Remove the covers and replug the battery on.
Idle it for about 20 minutes after that to dry up any water residue. Or if you have pressurized air, do it that way.
Finally, put a big smirk on your face, cuz man is that engine CLEAN.
Definitely helped mine, before cleaning it, every time i got out of my truck it smelled like nasty grime was burning. Took care of that problem...
