My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Sorry I’m starting this off kind of half-baked. I’ve started digging into the EVTM. But I don’t think it positively answers my question.

How secure is RAPS and how does it compare to PATS? My ‘96 Explorer donor vehicle has RAPS. I want to delete it. Do I have a chip key to be concerned about?

The EVTM shows that inserting the key sends a signal through a resistor to the RAPS system. Is that all there is to it other than the hood, door and tailgate switches and door button pad? Is it that simple? Or is there a chip reader and chips in my keys like PATS? My keys don’t look like chip keys. But I know that can be deceiving.

Yeah. I’m at work during a snowstorm and got my work for the day finished. 3.5 hours til I go home.

98 was the first year Explorer to use a chip key to my understanding. None of my locksmithing books say otherwise and I’ve never seen a chip key in an older one.

RAPS module has nothing to do with anti-theft, that’s seat belts and airbags and stuff

Thank you. That is what my digging in the EVTM was leading me to believe. But they rarely show you anything that’s going in inside some if those electronic boxes. Should be easy to delete.

Yeah, I’m a little disappointed that the factory EVTMs don’t have a little more detail. They are definitely better than Haynes manuals but that’s not saying a whole lot
