Egr ?

okay guys, he just wanted to know how to check to see if his truck has EGR, he probally doesnt give a damn if yours does.

very good. you proved me wrong. want a cookie? :dunno:

if your done gloating, id like to get back on track :icon_thumby:

How do they please the EPA withOUT it?

I'd like to get rid of mine, and all the associated crap like DPFE, etc... but will my PCM become "confused"???

the EPA is only concerned with the tailpipe emissions. it doesnt care how the manufacturer gets there. certain vehicles are able to get away without certain emissions components.

getting rid of your EGR and other emissions "crap" will cause drivability, reliability, fuel economy, and power problems...not to mention the increased emissions. there are no advantages to getting rid of emissions devices, i dont know why people are so eager to do so.

But how are SOME Ranger 3.0s able to meet the tailpipe reqs., and others NOT? :icon_confused:

As far as removing it, peeps want to do it because the system shyts where it eats, and a combo of exhaust soot fouling and/or sensor failures... CAN LEAVE YOU ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! It's a matter of complexity reduction, or K.I.S.S.

it depends on the emissions qualification (california or federal), and the ever-changing requirements of the EPA. appearantly, ford was able to meet EPA standards in '02-'05 with just tweeking the computer...but then in '06 they had to bring EGR back to meet some new requirement or what-have-you.

no amount of EGR failure will EVER leave you stranded on the side of the road. EVER. you could porposly ravage the system and still not get anything worse than sever drivability problems (the PCM has specific failure modes built in for instances just like this).

my theory is people want to get rid of EGR systems and other emissions components because they dont take the time to understand how they function...and thus they are either scared of it or think there are some MPG or power benefits to be had by removing them (there arent). EGR is a simple concept, if you take the time to learn how it works.

Au contraire, mon frer... granted, I let it go for a while, but it will shut you down for 20+ minutes, seriously lean out your mixture, and possibly result in $$ citations if you stall on a bridge, tunnel or other chokepoint during rush hour. :shok:

Sure, I eventually figured out it was the DPFE, and yes I've learned more about the metered orifice and EGR valve than I ever want to know, but still... late at night... I secretly envy the '02-'05 guys, and I covet their "nekkid and free" Vulcans. :D

Now the only question is: do the NON-egr Vulcans have the same LH exhaust manifold, merely plugged, or did FoMoCo actually cast a different part? :icon_confused:

Post some pics, you lucky non-EGR "nekkid and free" Vulcan dudes. :icon_thumby:

my '93 is non-egr. the casting is there for the EGR tube, but it isnt drilled and tapped.
