egr open at idle need help

hi as the title says my egr is open at idle and is causing bad idle and not passing smog. it shakes and misses. as soon as i take off vacuum line from egr solenoid switch to egr valve the truck idles perfact . What tests can i do to see what's wrong with it . Thanks


92 ford ranger engine 2.3 transmission stick shift 2wd

Erase the computer memory and then disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour. Then run it for 20 mins at medium speed to set the new values. While it is still hot run the codes be sure and clean/inspect all the connectors and use a little dielectric grease when you put them together. It could be just a bad connection or wire somewhere be thorough and then you can further diagnose if necessary. the egr sounds just fine maybe the EVR is not venting allowing the EGR to close

Replace the EGR solenoid!
It's stuck open.
Removing its electrical connector (while the engine is idling poorly) should confirm that.

I removed mine. It runs great without it. You could probably put a plug inside the vacuum line and the smog people would not know it is bypassed.

i remove the evr connetor and idle is still messed up. i am going to try to disconnet the batttery for half an hour and see what happens. btw my evr has an adapter were the 2 wires come to it . does it need it i opened it and it has a resister in it can that go bad and cause the evr to not close

i switch the egr solenoid cause it was leting 15 in-hg of vacuum tur at idle i switched it from a junk yard truck . it got better. not opening the egr all the way at idle but it's still opens
