eBay all-in-one keyless entry key

I recently bought an '03 Ford Ranger for my Dad, but I only got one key with the truck. I called the Ford dealership and gave them the VIN and found that it came with keyless entry. I did not get any keyless entry fobs with the truck.

So I went on eBay and found this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/28105624226...iewitem=&sspagename=ADME:L:OU:US:3160&vxp=mtr

I bought one and so far I have had the key cut and it works fine unlocking the doors. I still have to get it programmed though. In the meantime, I have found that it will not fit the ignition lock cylinder. They plastic part of the key is too thick since it's an all-in-one key.

I'm now debating wether or not I should use a Dremel outfitted with a small sanding drum to remove some material in the ignition lock's key turn handle (where the key goes in) so that the new key will fit. It doesn't look like I'll have to remove much, as the key slides in about 75% of the way before the plastic interferes. If this works, then I'll go ahead and have it reprogrammed..

Anybody out there been through this before?

Can't say that I have...but I'd be very careful about sanding off the ignition...unless you pull it out or stuff something in it to keep out the filings...

I'd be more inclined to look at sanding down the plastic on the key itself if possible...

And there is no guarantee that the key will actually turn the ignition once it fits because unless you change the switch internals there is a good chance the new key won't actually work...

But this could make a good stickie for those who want to upgrade their ignition...:icon_thumby:

Contact the seller about it. I wouldn't modify anything until then.

If I do end up modding it, I was thinking of using a short length of shoe string packed in the lock cylinder to keep metal dust out, and also using a shop vac held up close to the sanding head.

And I tried to contact the seller via eBay, but apparently there is no way to contact him as far as I can tell yet. Freaking eBay these days..according to the auction, the key fits all '03 Ford Rangers which I've found to be false.

Uggh. That sucks. I rarely use Fleebay anymore because of an issue with a seller. The guy started harassing me on the gmail messenger even. He sold me a broken headlight switch and I left him negative feedback after he made me file a claim through eBay to get my money back. He was an arrogant prick.

Best of luck on contacting your seller. I feel your pain.

why not just get a remote fob, and get a factory 03 ford key.. get it cut, .. saves your ignition, time & money!

Don't mod it. I think you will find you have another issue. IIRC the IKT (Integrated Key Transmitter, that's what Ford calls them) operate on a different frequency. You can program older stand-alone fobs to vehicles that came with IKT keys, but I have had no success going the other way and programming a key-head unit to an earlier vehicle by using it as just a remote.

Also, you paid $130, plus shipping, for that. A regular PATS key, from Ford, is $20. A fob is maybe $40. So that is $60 for both, from Ford, guaranteed to work, for less than half of what you paid for e-bay garbage.

Actually it was only about $35 for the IKT key including the cost of having it cut by a local hardware store. But after reading your last post, it doesn't sound like going through the trouble of modifying the key slot and then having it programmed by a local locksmith is going to yield positive results. Damn.

Just a small update...

Today I went to the local Ford dealership and bought a new PATS key and a keyless entry key fob. Had them programmed and the key cut for about $135... they work great and I now have *two* functonal keys + fob..

I then found directions online on how to program key fobs, and tried it on the the IKT (Integrated Key Transmitter) keys that I got on eBay. I programmed them and they work great!

Now all that is left to do is to program the PATS chip so that the eBay IKT keys will actually start the engine. Right now the IKT keys will unlock the doors, keyless entry buttons are programmed successfully, and will turn the ignition lock cylinder but will not start the engine. I will attempt this tomorrow...

Yesterday I was successfully program the inegrated keys I got from eBay. I had already had them cut, and had programmed the keyless entry, but now the keys start up the Ranger as well. The keys came with a direction sheet on how to program them. You do need two already functioning keys present in order to program them, but it's very easy. I was able to get the keys cut and fully programmed without going to the dealership or a locksmith at all!

Now all that is left to do is either sand down the plastic on the key head a bit *or* enlarge the keyhole slot on the steering column so they slide in all the way since the integrated keys are a bit thicker.
