I own a 96 2.3 ranger
Started a few months ago and seems to be getting worse. Sometimes I put the e brake on but feels like something slips and the peddle goes all the way down, so I bring the peddle up and try again and usually the only way it will grip is if I partially engage it others it completly slips again and the pedal is back on the floor. I looked in my hanes Manual but all it covers is cable replacement.
Were is the problem area? I havn't really checked anything but if someone can tell me where to look that would help much.

Sounds like the ratcheting mechanism in the pedal itself is going for a shit.

id start with your break pads. e brakes are self adjusting. at first glance id say replace your rear pads. then re adjust your break cable if it stretched.

wait does the petal just flop around like it not connected to anything.

I think its what Sasquatch_Ryda said about the ratcheting mechanism in the pedal, I took a quick look there not sure how it works or how its even bolted on buts it feels like it lost its grip,
I would compare the feeling to trying to pull a rope but you cant seem to get a good grip and it keeps sliding out of your hand,
is there away to fix this ratcheting mechanism? I can't see a whole lot but it looks like one piece.
Is this piece fixable?

I believe there was TSB about this released from ford with a repair kit available.

I was completly wrong, I realized yesturday it's the front cable seizing, When I pulled the cable under the truck it just hangs, I sprayed a whole bunch of WD-40 where the cable goes in on the bottom of the truck and where it comes out by the ebrake peddle worked it in pretty good
Works much better, not perfect but better
