just got my truck out of the shop to fix my bellhousing cause my starter bolt holes were screwed. pay the big bucks go out in the parking lot an my starter starts the truck but grinds !!!! he said it needed the spacer between bell housing an motor an says i dont have to take the tranny out to change it the thing looks like a dust cover to me of no significance but idk is this guy right?? im gonna try on monday to get them to fix it i paid em 500 bucks to make it start good its not starting good !

it wasn't there or they forgot to put it back on?

no theres one there they said it wasnt no good though i dunno the starter is kinda loud but dont grind right until before it starts an does it like a second or two not right though the sound

I got mine all bolted up and then realized that cover was laying on the bench. Here's how I got it in. I pulled the starter out along with all but the top two bell housing bolts. If it's an automatic remove the 4 torque converter nuts. Back the top two bolts out until there are 2 or 3 threads holding them in. If it's an automatic make sure the torque converter moves with the transmission. Slide the dust cover up between the flywheel and the block. The top end of the cover will sort of snap over the 2 bolts. or if your carefull you take one of the bolts out.
Now that I've said that, If the cover was there when the truck went in the shop, it should be there when it came out. Hell for $500 if it was missing they shoulda got one and put in.

If it's an automatic? GET THAT INSTALLED!! We pulled our old transmission from our BII and it didn't have that plate. You can see where the torque converter fins actually rubbed into the bell housing! That spacer might just be 1/16" thick...but it makes a huge difference.

Sounds like the mechanic forgot to put the plate on or didn't want to fool with it, so they gave you a story. For $500 to fix starter bolts they should make it right. Highly unlikely a cover plate would be "no good".

If there was indeed a bad part they should have advised you during the repair so you could authorize replacement.

I used to let stuff like that slide, but no more. Guess I'm getting crochetty in my old age.:headbang:
