Durable paint?

Believe it or not, I painted my Ranger twice with Imron.

The first take was in my garage with just a hood, mask/filter. No air supply. Didn't know better. That was mid 90's.

The second time was outdoors in a wide open area in late afternoon. Believe it or not, even painting outside I didn't get a single piece of debris in the paint (not visible at least) and got a nice glossy finish without a clear coat. The reason I painted it outside was the fumes.

Not sure yet what I'll use......

What would i need to have to paint with in the first place?

Im thinking about doing my truck myself (doing a couple riding mowers as practice of course.:derisive:)

I believe you totally, hell I've seen your truck lol. I've painted outside too without any dirt, biggest problem I have is bugs, but I pick em out lol.

i used the duplicolor on my ranger when i did the general lee job, an well u get what u pay for i chose it cause its gonna get beat up but it chips an stuff on the bottom hardcore if you wax it it will look great for a few weeks but yea you get what u pay for im used to using dupont an the like.

you guys cant be CLEARING any kind of paint!! clear will react to the paint if its not a compatible compound. it will actually lift the old paint off and it will look like you used auto-striper. a durable cheap paint is a good ol' PPG shopline either do a singlestage or a base clear i doubt u'd wannt do a tri-stage on a rock rig of mudder BUT it is very inexpensive, im sure you could paint your truck base clear for 200$ pretty easily. or u could do a single stage just spray it and buff it it will look wet :) but thats my .02

:icon_confused: You can clear over single stage all you want. Might run into problems if you try putting urethane over enamel or lacquer...but urethane on urethane is perfectly fine.

You can clear over anything if you wait a month or so before doing it. Enamel takes forever to completely dry so you have to wait a long time. And NEVER use laquer over enamel. EVER. I am just starting my little project but already am thinking about paint. Probably will go base/clear because I will be doing some mild design and using multiple colors. Base/clear lets you mask almost immediately. Otherwise I would have to wait between colors and the line between them would be feelable.

I know im readin old posts, but i find them interesting. Why cant you use rustoleum? The outdoor furniture paint? I read an article where a guy painted a 66 stang with it. A flat rubber roller and alot of dripping paint, but the beauty is all int he sanding. He did his sanding and wetsanding just right and had showroom shine on his car that rarely needed wax.
