dummy's guide for shifting

Rules:

1. Err on the side of stalling the engine.
2. Don't rest your foot on the clutch pedal or your hand on the knob.
3. If you have to smash the skinny pedal to the floor to maintain your speed, you need to downshift. If you have the engine wound up and you're barely pushing the skinny pedal, you need to upshift.
4. Do not coast with the clutch pedal held down. Shift to neutral and get your foot off the pedal. Even on a driveway.
5. Do not coast to a stop. Climb down through the gears; only coast the last few feet. That way, if traffic starts moving again, you don't have to hunt around for the gear you need and accidentally grab the wrong one.
6. Reverse is way too fast. Be ready.

The best thing is to work on getting the truck moving without the gas pedal. People get confused when you give them 2 things to do at the same time. Just idle around using the clutch--bump it forward, feel the grip. Push it in when it gets close to stalling. The clutch feel is crutial when you start offroading it. Your engine has enough torque to get it going without any throttle. You may have to kick your dad out while you play with it. But on an auto, there are 2 pedals and 3 on a manual. It's that clutch you need to work on, not the gas. Once you spend 20 minutes and know where the thick spot on the clutch pedal is without wincing, you won't have a problem when you add the gas to it.

i agree completely. how i learned was on my dealership back parking lot with no gas at all. I felt the clutch grab and thats all i needed to know, instead of getting confused. i taught my girlfriend and all you need to do is practice, practice and practice. :icon_thumby:

seriously, what was the logic there? hey guys, lets make the reverse gear super tall just in case you need to drive out of the mall parking lot backwards and are running away from the security guards :sorrysign::offtopic::woot:
