So I finally got my 89 ranger back up and running and now its time for the body wok. I'm replacing alot of sheet metal and getting it ready to be painted. Now the problem is how do you stop the door from rattling? Do the hinges come loose? is it the pin in the hinges? could it be the latch? it shuts fine and seals alright, but everytime I hit a bump it sounds like its going to jump off the door. What can I do about this.

Any help would be great
thanks in advance,
Marc

open the door and lift up on the outer edge....is there any movement at the hindes? if so you need new hinge pins and bushings (kind of a bitch to replace as the old pins need to be ground off).

also check the striker bolt on the door pillar. it should have a plastic/teflon bushing on it. if the bushing is missing or ripped open, its time for a new one.

door pin bushings are junk. never worked on one of those, so i don't know what all entails in the replacement, however you can check to see if that is what it is by grabbing the door on the latch side and lift it up and down and watch your door pins, if the bushings are junk you'll know. also look where the pin goes through the hinge and see if it is excessively wore and egged, if it is you might be better to replace the entire hinge.

Easier to remove the door at the hinge itself if it's not too rusted...it's a two man job that way but so is doing the pin unless you like having pinched fingers...just make sure you outline the hinge position before removing it (although most are pretty easy to see where they were...

If you don't notice any slop in the pins it may just be that the hinge came loose...that happened on one of my doors...but it was rusted out so no surprise...

also check the striker bolt on the door pillar. it should have a plastic/teflon bushing on it. if the bushing is missing or ripped open, its time for a new one.

This is the problem with mine, but what killed the strikers is bad door alignment (worn hinge pins). And it does sound like the door is going to "unlatch", even though it shuts and seals fine. I am waiting to fix the issue before I put on a different set of strikers, no sense in ruining those, too.

The extra weight of the door on top of the striker bushing and hitting bumps caused it to cut through/wear out over time..

Where is a good place to buy new hinges and strikers. I might as well just replace them since I am having the truck painted. They are going to take the doors off to paint the jams so they can put new hinges on for me.

most auto parts stores carry, or can order hinge pin and bushing kits and striker bolts.

I wouldn't buy a hinge from an auto parts store, but the pins and bushings should be new...I went to buy a hinge for my Tempo once and they wanted over $100...fortunately, my friend was a mechanic and let me order the part under his shop name...cost me $25...but you can get them at the junkyard for next to nothing...
