don't know what this is!!!!

Maybe it had a pushbutton start at one time that someone decided to get rid of?

The only two things that I know of that would be with the radio is the chime module and ABS module. And both of them are bigger than that little black box. Battery saver was a good mention.

This almost makes me want to tear out the radio bezel of my Ranger to see if I have one. But if I remember good enough, I don't recall one in my 96' Ranger.

Is it hooked up to your wipers? Maybe for the washer jet? Horn? Potato cannon? Flash-to-pass lights?

Potato cannon. Now thats an option I'd like to have ...:icon_welder: :icon_thumby:

Could it be to turn off the passenger side airbag?

When I pull out my radio I'll see if I have anything like that attached to that box.

Most likely has to do with the chime or it had a push button start rigged in (because it had a broken tumbler, etc) that someone fixed properly and left the button there.

What is that part number on the side of the box?

The one thing that really doesn't feel right about half of these suggestions is that they are that its something after-market, but the part looks to me like it is a factory part.

adsm08 I agree The wire colors and shape of the connector look to be the 4x4 motor control relay assembly page 34-1 of the 98 wireing manual the basic # is 14n089. the switch was probally a bypass of some sort.

$20 says it's a dummy switch. The po put it in there to have a laugh at the thought of someone wondering "wtf is this for?!?!??!" and spending hours taking all kinds of **** apart in the truck only to find that the wires disappear somewhere into the oblivion of the dash.

Said po might even be reading this thread now. :icon_rofl:
