Dome Light

I have a 1997 2WD XLT SuperCab. My question is should the dome light come on when I open either one of the doors? Mine does not and I can't recall if it ever did. I can turn on the dome light with the switch to one side or the other but that's all it does right now. Just wondering if that's normal or not.

It should come on when you open either door. Sounds like a problem with the wiring to the door switches.

there is a switch on the light itself - 3 position - off-door-on - at least there is on mine. Switch needs to be in the center. could be bad switch

That is also a possibility. I often forget that because older trucks didn't have that option.

My three positions seem to be left side on - all off - right side on.

That middle position should be normal dome light operation.

I agree... on my '97 the switch on the light doesn't work but the ones in the doors work and the dimmer switch works... I would look at the switches on the door latches (in the doors), it's possible that they broke off of the latch, one on my Explorer did that...

That said getting to the switch isn't the easiest, pull the door panel and get in that way but you'll also have to pull the clip for the lock cylinder to get it's linkage off then take out the 3? screws that hold the latch in. Not too hard but not very visible.
