Hello all, I have a 1988 bronco II with the a4ld automatic transmission and it is going out. A buddy of mine has a 1990 bronco II with the a4ld automatic transmission and his motor crapped out but the transmission is good. Will this be a direct fit into my 1988? Both of these trucks have the V6 engine and are both 4 wheel drive.

When I search the salvage yard compatability charts they say the 1990 transmission is different than the 1988 / 1989. If anyone knows what the differences are and if I can make the 1990 transmission work in my 1988 please let me know. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

I believe the differences are internal. The trans will bolt up just fine. The only possible problem you might run into would be the wiring connections for the trans, but IIRC, they did remain the same in those years.

One difference to keep an eye on is that 88's are floor shift and the 90 is column shift.

The tab comming out the trans for shifting will need to be flipped.

lol, thanks for bringing that up, I hadn't had my coffee yet when I posted

I put in a 1994 A4LD tranny from a 94 ranger in my 88 bronco 2. The 88 have a 3 wire tranny plug as well as the 1994. All I had to do was take off the dummy transfer case (being i have a 2wd) and put on a tailhousing from a 86 ranger tranny that had a hole for the speedo and electronic plug in. she is running great.. you also need to modify the shifting linkage which i had to do..
