Not sure on the 2.3, but there is definitely special wrenches...from the 50's,60's,70's....

I can usually get a socket on there with a longish wobble extension.

Solid Axle Swap
I made a custom 17mm socket for that... it's basically a shallow 3/8 drive socket but I ground down the drive end so that it's very skinny and fits just right in that weird spot.
