weld it!

if you find a locker for it, i have an open carrier you can snag on the cheap-cheap
 
Keep in mind:
1. Its my dd (unless its broke)
2. The money I save now wont cover new tires
3. I am impatient

The problem is I have the axles out, but I want them in asap. And with Japan's current situation, its slowing down so it may be awhile before I have the cash for it.

The Focus holds down the garage floor most of the time. I try to keep it clean and the mileage down on it.
 
Welding the rear will take some of pressure off the locked front .

Will not turn as sharp with rear welded . It will try to push you forward .

With a 110v welder you might not get enough penetration .

It's free if you do it yourself .

If you do do it . Pull the carrier , degrease several times , clean with brake cleaner and blow dry . I just weld the spider gears where they touch each other in 8 places . I don't weld to the carrier , but I know some do . Cover the ring gear with a wet towel .
 
A welded rear in a B2 isnt really that bad at all... The worst thing when turning, is the frontend wants to dive on the outside, and even then, who takes a B2 around corners that fast anyway. The scrubbing isnt that bad also, and 90% I cant even tell its locked. If your planning on a locker in the future, weld it up for now. Ive had mine locked for 3 months, and while there is a tiny amount of wear, its way less than I thought. The benefits offroad are more than worth the downsides on the street.
 
That settles it. I'll weld it then. If I see too much wear, I'll pick up another carrier and have the ring installed on it.

throw the carrier in the freezer for a few hours and toss the ring gear in the oven for 10 minutes and you can do it yourself, it's crazy how easy it goes on
 
best way ive seen it done was preheating the spiders welding those and then welding a plate in between the spiders and sidegears then once all that was done wrapping it in a fiberglass blanket and burying it in kitty litter. thats how i did mine. but i havent gotten to test it at all. but that i show my buddy does it on his stock cars and it seems to work well.
 
Its the shimming that worries me. I don't think I have the patience to attempt it.

i got ninja'd you guys started talking about the ring gear after i started typing about welding the diff.

i meant for when you weld the spyders. thats the best way ive scene it done, ive tryed just welding the diff up real hot but the gears end up brittle and end up shattering every time. so when it came to the newest diff i had to weld. i got my buddy show me how he does it

-regular cleaning with brake clean and air

- heat the spyder/side gears red hot.

- weld all those together real good in the corners

- get a piece of 1/8" (or whatever scrap) rectangle plate to weld between all the spyders/side gears

- then to avoid it all getting brittle you want it to cool as slow as poosible. so you wrap it in a fibergalss blanket and bury it in a bucket in kitty litter

-wait a day and then clean it and re-install everything
