Alright hive, I’m at a crossroads. My stock OEM headlights currently have the clarity of a bowl of oatmeal, and I can’t decide if I should save them or scrap them.
Do I respect the OEM build quality and stay humble, or do I lean full-tilt into the "Black Chrome" aesthetic and pray the sealant holds for more than a week? I fancy the dark look, but I also fancy actually being able to see a deer before it becomes a permanent part of my hood.
Option 1: The "Elbow Grease" Restoration
I could invest some elbow grease, wet-sanding the OEM units for restoration. They’re genuine parts and the beam pattern actually points at the road instead of the treetops but fairly sure 70% they’ll turn yellow again the second I look at them funny.
Option 2: The "Black Chrome" Special
I’ve been eyeing some aftermarket units with that sweet, sweet black chrome housing. They look mean. They look fast. They look like they belong on a car that isn't a base-model commuter but who knows if light output might just be like a flickering bday candle.

P.S. If I go aftermarket, does anyone have a recommendation for a marine-grade sealant that can stop a leaky headlight from becoming a terrarium?

So, I’ve had mixed results with the DIY cut n buff deal. I’ve had some success with cleaning them up but preserving them for long like that proved challenging. I have another trick up my sleeve to try but I haven’t gotten around to trying it.

I’ve also had mixed results with aftermarket. My green Ranger had tinted aftermarket lights when I got it and they were always a disappointment, both the headlights and the taillights. They looked ok, but they didn’t put light out for nothing.

I bought a tinted set for my F-150 and never ended up putting them in because they didn’t come with the plastic screws and one little metal bracket you needed to put them together and the ones on my factory set were rusted to the point that I didn’t like my chances of salvaging what I’d need. Intended to get a junkyard set and just haven’t gotten that far yet.

My 88 I bought a set of glass lens with replaceable bulbs, takes like an H1 or something. An attempted upgrade over stock. Truck is still torn apart so the jury is still out on performance.

When I did the 5.0 swap in my green Ranger I also did a bit of an 01 front clip swap. I also found some nifty looking 01-11 style lights that have sequential turn lights. Turns out there was a wiring change in like 04 that the aftermarket doesn’t mention so I had to adapt my harness. Think they ran me like $150-ish for the pair. Been pretty happy with them. Maybe the trick is to spring for something more than the cheapest aftermarket. I’m eyeing some C bar rear taillights for the green Ranger, they’re running about the same price as what I spent on the fronts. I’m just presently dealing with other more important expenses.

I did the wet sand method on our old Prius and it needed to be redone often, 6 month to a year at best. Had a couple other vehicles that were the same deal. The Goodyear dealer in town did my work trucks and they put some kind of preservative on that lasted forever- I was pretty impressed with that, wish I knew what it was.
