Diesel engine swap candidates.

A friend of mine had an OM617 in his 92 4Runner. It was a pretty cool setup, but he wasn't able to get a stock Yota tranny to hold up to the increase in power.

Which engine?

Cat has a huge selection of smaller engines under 100 horsepower. I'll admit I am a Cat lover.

Actually I was completely wrong, he had a Perkins in it, couldn't tell you the exact model though.
edit: It was a Perkins that was in a cat forklift.

I really don't have my heart set on any diesel, but I do run into cheap small diesels from time to time. Being I have OBD I and a manual transmission I think that helps doing a swap.

the benz and audi engines along with thhe japanese engines are all decent


jdm stuff with a flipped t case is decent.

the south american stuff is ideal.

The 4-53T weights in around 1200-1300 lbs.
The 4-71T should be just shy of a ton.
