I've been running my new swapped 8.8 axle that I installed this past Saturday and assumed there was gear oil in it. I've been running it for almost a week! I decided to check it right now and it was 3 quarts low!

No noises or anything, I just decided to have a look because my buddy told me yesterday after looking at it "you checked the fluid and everything right?", so I decided to look and it was dangerously low.

Did I dodge a bullet here? Thanks

3 quarts? That's about all it takes, if it keeps on keepin' on I'd say you got lucky, only time will tell.

you didn't change the fluid when you installed it??

NO. I know that's stupid of me but I assumed there was fluid in it until this next weekend came around when I realy had time to do it. Thank god I checked it though. My buddy said there had to be something in there because it would of started making noises or I would have fried it you know?

Thanks guys.

Fill it up, drive it for a bit and then check the oil again, look to see if its gone all silvery looking and see if anything big is stuck to the magnet. If it wasn't making any noise you might have gotten lucky.

Keep your fingers crossed.

I hope so too!

Yeah, like I said "no noises or acting funny or anything" I just decided to take a look to be on the safe side and noticed I could'nt feel any fluid with my pinkie finger in the fillhole.

You've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya?

i drove around with no oil in the diff for like a month before it locked up on me. then i put it in 4lo and and it broke free, i put fluid in it and i've put like 1000 miles on it and its still going.

Works like an old whore still!

There was fluid in it, but VERY little. I guess just enough though. When I drained it out (just about an hour ago) there were no metal flakes or silverish tint to the fluid. Filled it with half a quart of "Lucas" and the rest hypoid gear fluid. Quiet as a racoon stealing garbage at night!

Dodged a bullet on that one! PHEW!!!
