Deer Whistle things, do they work?

a good deer catcher does => where i live you are prefectly allowed to keep deer you hit out of season so long as you report the deer hit to the police.

Here you have to call the sheriff and get a salvage tag, which is free.

I personally stopped using deer whistles after the last to deer I hit broke my whistles off of my "Bambi stopper" (push bar)

I have over the years hit fourteen deer.

If I want to hit any more I'll reinstall the whistles.... and remove my driving lights.

My friend hit one with his ZX2 (no whistles). He said it was like something out of the Matrix since the deer stood jumped as he got closer and he went under it, but it's legs caught his hood and drivers mirror, breaking it off. He said it pissed him off so he threw it in reverse and backed over it, lol.

I've never actually had good luck with them... All they really do is fall off, lol... I think being able to see the deer and avoid it (by slowing down) is better than trusting that the deer will be smart enough to be scared away by the whistle... I've never hit a deer, but all my vehicles have loud exhaust... My mom has hit three since she's had her car... I think they know I'm coming and get out of the way, lol...

I think for a few bucks I'm gonna try them. I just hate the thought of trashing my beautiful truck by not at least trying. I drive the interstate through the country at night and morning and have seen toooooo many not to try a little insurance. $7 versus $500 (along with hoping the body man can get the paint right).
50 cal. front mounted with 180 degree spray would be pretty cool too though.

i have never had them on any of my trucks , and have never hit a deer , i did clip one once , he had crossed the road into the other lan , then as i got right up to him he backed up a little , and i caught his ass with the bumper and sent him sprawling , and all my trucks have had loud exhaust

The greatest danger isn't driving in the woods, it's driving near a cornfield.

FWIW I carry a buck skinner, neoprene gloves and several large ziplock bagks in the truck at all times...

I can never resist a free backstrap.

Don't know if they work or not.

A friend was on a weekend trip near Yosemite with his girl friend, each on a BMW 1000. He had just bought a used one, had deer whistles on it but road his other one instead (no whistles).

He hit a deer dead center, his girl said the deer exploded, his bike went into a high speed wobble, he came off the bike, his helmet came off, head hit the road and took a chunk out of his skull. He was dead before he stopped rolling.

This happened just before cell phones so she had to sit there and wait for someone to drive by to help and to get the cops.

I've never heard of them working. I'm with the guys abpve. I made my exhaust louder and the always turn and run way before I get there. Sorry to hear about your friend Carlos. That's horrib;e she had to sit there for so long.

LOL!!

We had 'em on a fleet of company trucks back in the 80's. One driver swore he could hear them working but that's another story entirely...

I hit a rather large buck and did about 3K of damage to the semi, and of course it knocked the deer whistle off of the truck on impact.

They only work until the first bug goes into the damn thing clogging it up.

As stated up at the beginning of the post, the best way to get past a deer is to NOT spook it or bring attention to yourself as you pass by. Just slip by.

I hit a deer with a semi about three weeks ago in lousyanna- the bastard was at full run and I knew there was no way to miss it. Here's the best part- the company I drive for had me take a DRUG TEST for hitting an F'in DEER! Yeah, good old corporate America... can't figure out why we're not making any money.

I vote yes. I had hit two deer in one year. Killed both. Knocked the front bumper of my 1995 Ranger Supercab in about 3" and did $2700 worth of damage to my 2000 Taurus. After the Taurus hit, I was talking to the Ohio Highway patrolman who came out and he recommended them. In the 8 years since, I have had deer stop dead in their tracks prior to coming in the road. I drive 150 miles a day and the only close call that I have had is one who stopped dead in the road when he heard the whistle. I figure $7 is not a whole lot of jack if it saves me a $250 comp deductible. Even put them on the new Mustang convertible.

We have bunches of deer here in East Central IN. I live out in the woods and of course there are cornfields along nearly every road and highway here. I'm skeptical that the deer whistles work,I've always heard they are supposed to make them freeze but my Mom swears by them. One night a doe hit the side of her Sable and left a "nose" sized dent in the front fender. My Dad was a trucker for many years and a good one and He told me that if you have time, (at night), to shut the headlights off long enough to break the "deer in the headlight" syndrome. It has worked for me before,I just thank the Lord I have never hit one. I do believe that if they are in a dead run not much of anything is gonna make a difference. I think the loud exhaust helps also.
